Terry Hands directs a beautifully designed,
generous-hearted production of Wilde's
masterpiece which combines comic panache
with a satisfying depth of characterisation.
Roger Allam is especially good
as a gauche, decent Jack Worthing, driven
to distraction by his insufferably clever
friend Algernon, and Barbara Leigh-Hunt
is in terrific form as an imperious Lady
Bracknell. The brilliant ingenuity with
which she negotiates that famous "handbag"
line is alone worth the price of admission.
