Background to the play

In November 1985 Terry Hands, Joint Artistic Director of the RSC, offered the women of the RSC Stratford Company the opportunity of finding a piece of work to be incorporated in the following season.

All the actresses in the Company met and put forward the names of many writers and directors, some of whom were subsequently invited to talk about their work.

One of the main problems was finding a common ground, because of the diversity of personalities within the groups. The decision therefore was to look for a new play of sufficient breadth and scope to be written, directed and designed by women which would serve a predominantly female cast.

Although the company of women changed in number over the intervening months the original commitment to the project was sustained and the first of what was hoped to be many similar ventures was launched with Heresies.
