Woman's Hour Drama: Les Misérables

Radio 4, 10.45am and 7.45pm

Radio isn't immune to the Beeb's customary seasonal glut of period adaptations, though this 25-part dramatisation of Victor Hugo's classic - the first in 50 years - bears a distinguished pedigree. A cast of 27 actors is led by Roger Allam as Jean Valjean, David Schofield as Inspector Javert, Leslie Phillips as Monsieur Gillenormand and Joss Ackland as Victor Hugo himself.

Moreover, the oft-told story still holds an irresistible sweep as it plumbs the depths of the human soul, indulging in time-honoured themes concerning the struggle between good and evil and the moving power of love and redemption. The play also features the radio debut of Patsy Palmer (better known as the volatile Bianca from EastEnders) as Eponine.
Synopsis
This dramatization of Victor Hugo's classic from 1862 is an epic story of social injustice, set in mid-18th century France. Memorable scenes include the Battle of Waterloo and Jean Valjean's flight through the Paris sewers.
