| The
Story |
|
| By
the time King Edward IV dies, his deformed
brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, has laid
plans to eliminate all obstacles between himself
and the throne. Those in direct line of succession
(his own brother Clarence, and Edward's two
young sons by Elizabeth Woodville) are murdered
and those who oppose Richard in his designs
(Elizabeth's brothers Rivers and Grey, Lord
Hastings and Richard's wife Lady Anne) likewise
disposed of. Queen
Margaret, widow of one of Richard's earlier
victims, Henry VI, returns from exile
to curse Richard and prophesy his downfall.
Her prophecies are fulfilled finally at
the Battle of Bosworth where Richard,
his relationship with the powerful Buckingham
severed, is defeated by Henry Earl of
Richmond who claims the crown and marries
Edward IV's daughter, thus uniting the
Houses of York and Lancaster.

| Date
and Sources |
|
| Shakespeare's
major source for Richard III was Holinshed's
Chronicles (1587), which is itself
loosely based on Edward Hall's The Union
of the noble and illustre famelies of Lancastre
and York (1550). Thomas More's History
of King Richard the thirde was written
c.1513, and printed in Grafton's Chronicle
in 1543. This conception of Richard's character
is followed closely by Shakespeare.
Probable date of
composition is 1593 or 1594. Richard is
mentioned in Weever's Epigrammes
of 1595 as one of Shakespeare's characters
but the first edition which appeared in
1597 was printed anonymously. In five
further Quartos however, such as that
of 1598, Shakespeare's name does appear.
It was first published in the First Folio
of 1623. |
