The
Telegraph - 30/10/95 - Charles Spencer
This is one of those irritating evenings
when a great play just about survives
its production rather than being enhanced
by it. The costumes are modishly "timeless",
the dismayingly shoddy sets lack the required
elegance, and Phyllida Lloyd sometimes
gives the impression that she's directing
a crude farce rather than one of the most
sophisticated comedies in the language.
But Congreve's wise and witty voice still
manages to make itself heard, with the
help of first-rate performances from Geraldine
McEwan, Roger Allam, Fiona Shaw
and a strong supporting cast.
